MEDITATION & WHAT IT CAN DO FOR YOUR HEALTH

What Is It?

Meditation. You hear it everywhere; it’s the one thing doctors have been recommending a lot recently. But what is it? Meditation is the use of mindfulness and focusing one’s mind on an object or thought to train your brain to be aware and alert in order to achieve emotional calmness and a solid state.

The History of Meditation

Meditation has been practiced for many years in numerous religions. There are early records of meditation, also known as dhyana, in Hindu texts that are very ancient, these texts are known as Vedas. The oldest documented evidence of practices of meditation date back to almost 5,000 BCE. This evidence is depictions of people with their eyes half closed and are sitting back in a relaxed position.

The Benefits on Your Mental Health

Counsellors, therapists, doctors and social workers have all seen first hand that meditation benefits your mental health. There are many things that meditation can do for your mental health, such as:

The Benefits on Your Physical Health

Something that a lot of people do not know is that meditation is not just for your mental health, it has benefits for your physical health as well! Meditation is said to:

● Reduce panic and anxiety attacks
● Decrease pain such as headaches and tension

Meditation is not a new concept, but it has been more widely recommended by doctors and social service workers in recent years. It stems long back in many religions, including Hinduism, where it is described in Vedas. Meditation not only has its mental health benefits, it has physical health benefits as well. It increases calmness and improves your concentration, as well as reducing stress and depression in your body, just to list a few.
